NFL Sunday causes carnage at US sportsbooks- 2004-11-24
US-focused sportsbooks suffered the worst NFL Sunday on record last weekend, with one sportsbook CEO describing the run of results as a “bloodbath”. Several sources from books serving the US market have reported that industry wide it was the worst Sunday on record.
VIP Sports, the Curacao-based sportsbook, for one said it suffered losses in the hundreds of thousands as 13 of the 14 favourites in Sunday’s match-ups came out on top.
“We've been in the business since 1997 and that was the worst day ever in our biggest sport,” Alistair Assheton, CEO of VIP Sports, said.
Industry watchdog site Gambling911.com also reported another long standing book suffered its worst ever Sunday with a hold of -16%.
And industry insiders are predicting some of the smaller books will be left in serious financial trouble if results don’t go their way this weekend.
The weekend’s results saw 14 out of 15 favourites win with 11 of those teams covering their handicap.
“It was one of those days we have been waiting to happen for years,” he added.
Operators serving the US market have had a torrid time in recent weeks with an unusually huge level of favourites winning in the NFL, which is by some distance the US’ largest betting market.
And this has been compounded by the strike in the NHL, which although a more marginal betting market has still led to a decrease in wagering turnover.
